Rescue Mission Intern Orientation

What is it?

This course is an accredited online eight-week version of the CVI Rescue Mission Intern Orientation Curriculum. Students interact with an online instructor and other students, have graded assignments and discussion forums and have weekly Zoom meetings. This course involves about 10-15 hours a week of student reading, live interactions and working on homework. Classwork must be done weekly and can be done any time of the week except for Zoom meetings (dates listed in the course).

Lorraine Minor at City Union Mission developed a program (originally called Servant Leadership Institute)  to train new interns primarily focused on equipping recent program graduates with the skills and attitudes they would need to succeed in rescue ministry. She has been running the program successfully for over a decade involving interns in many rescue missions. As faculty and a board member with City Vision University, she worked with City Vision’s President, Dr. Andrew Sears to convert it to an accredited course.

Why use it?

This is the best first course for most clients or recent graduates from rescue missions to take. It is designed particularly targeting those who may not feel ready for college and need a simple starting point. This course is particularly focused on helping rescue mission program graduates make the shift to becoming interns or new staff at rescue missions. When students take the course with City Vision University, not only do they get credit, but it enables you to “outsource” the course to City Vision rather than teaching it yourself. In addition, students benefit from interaction with peers and faculty from other rescue missions.

Who uses it?

It was originally developed at City Union Mission and has now been used by dozens of rescue missions both directly through Lorraine’s SLI program, as an accredited course through City Vision University and as a free course through City Vision Institute.

How do I get started and what does it cost?

We have found that the vast majority of clients in rescue mission programs or recent graduates qualify for Pell grants, which will cover the full cost of the course and may typically provide the students with $100-200 in additional income. Our regular tuition is $750/course, but this is discounted to $637.50/course for all rescue missions (or similar ministries). We discount to $500/course to organizations that send two or more paying students in a given year.
